VERY IMPORTANT PETS

Partners in Friendship:
VIP Dogs

Aligning with our mission, NSD strives to meet our dogs where they are, matching their needs and personalities for the best possible outcomes for our teams. When our dogs indicate their career path is better suited for something outside our other programs, they are instead adopted into loving homes, most often within the NSD community of supporters who loved them first, as Very Important Pets.

“Very Important Pets have the important job of providing love to their forever family.”

VIP Program

Very Important Pets offer love and companionship without the specific training required of working Service Dogs. VIP placements ensure a perfect match, finding the ideal home environment for each dog's personality.

Dogs are generally one to two years of age upon placement. When the decision is made to transition a dog into a pet, we look for an internal placement first. If one is not available, we refer to our waiting list.

Updates

NSD is not currently accepting applications from families interested in adopting a VIP dog. Please check back for updates on when these applications will reopen.

Several factors determine the cost of a VIP and will be made available along with the dog’s adoption bio to those eligible to apply.

All of our released dogs are microchipped, up to date on their vaccines, from well established breeding lines, and have attended weekly obedience training classes and gone through extensive socialization. Recipients of our VIPs become the sole owners of the dog upon receipt and are responsible for all expenses associated with the dog from that day forward.

Currently, an applicant may wait up to a year or longer to receive a VIP. The timing of a VIP placement is not determined by chronological position on the waiting list. Each VIP will be placed in the home that is the best fit for the dog and their individual health and training needs.

Our VIP dogs indicate their career path is better suited for a loving home as a Very Important Pet. Most often, these dogs are placed within our NSD community, but check our updates section on this page to see up-to-date information on application statuses.
