Puppy Raisers Needed! Volunteer Opportunity Summer or Fall 2025

Every Service Dog starts as a puppy in need of guidance, care, and training. That’s where the Puppy Raiser Program comes in—helping young dogs build confidence and develop the foundational skills they need to assist individuals with disabilities. For the first 14-16 months of their lives, these puppies rely on dedicated volunteers to introduce them to the world, teach them basic obedience, and prepare them for their future work through structured Service Dog Training. NSD is currently looking for Puppy Raisers for July 2025, then again in Aug/Sept. If you’re ready to be part of something life-changing, apply today to become a volunteer.

While raising a puppy may seem like a challenge, it’s also an incredibly fulfilling experience. You’ll be shaping a future Service Dog, watching them grow from a playful pup into a well-mannered, capable companion for someone in need. Though saying goodbye is bittersweet, knowing your efforts will directly change someone’s life makes every moment worthwhile.

What Does a Puppy Raiser Do?

As a Puppy Raiser, your role goes beyond just providing a home. You’ll be part of a supportive community and have the opportunity to:

  • Expose your puppy to real-world experiences
  • Attend regular training classes
  • Build lifelong bonds
  • Make a lasting impact

The Support You’ll Receive

Becoming a Puppy Raiser doesn’t mean doing it alone! NSD provides all the resources and guidance you need, including:

  • All essential supplies – food, veterinary care, training jackets, and collars.
  • 24/7 health support – access to professionals who can assist with any concerns.
  • Structured training programs – one-on-one support and group sessions to help you and your puppy succeed.
  • Access to NSD’s dog park – a secure space for training and playtime.
  • Puppy Sitting services – a network of dedicated volunteers ready to care for your puppy when needed.

Who Can Become a Puppy Raiser?

This opportunity is open to individuals and families who:

  • Live within 45 minutes of Kitchener-Waterloo / Cambridge.
  • Are willing to dedicate time to Service Dog socialization and training.
  • Have no more than two adult dogs in their home.
  • Are committed to attending training classes and providing a loving, structured environment for their puppy.

Why You Should Consider Becoming a Puppy Raiser

Raising a future Service Dog isn’t just about training but changing lives. The independence, security, and companionship that these dogs provide are priceless to their future handlers. By stepping up to be a Puppy Raiser, you’re playing a direct role in changing lives—one puppy at a time.

If you’re looking for a unique way to give back, love dogs, and want to be part of something meaningful, this is your chance. Open your home and heart to a Service Dog in training and experience the joy of watching them grow into a hero.

Volunteer with NSD today and become a part of an incredible journey! Fill out the volunteer form here.
