NSD Rolo

Rolo is currently with his adult raiser. He has started University and goes to NSD for training 5 days a week. When not at NSD, he learns how to settle, cuddle and continue to be a welcomed member of the community. This training will help prepare him to be matched with his client.

All of the training and care provided to each dog would not be possible without the support of generous volunteers and donors.

Training Updates

I am getting so big, but I am still a huge cuddlier! When my raiser is sitting on the ground I will sneak over to her and climb up onto her lap for a quick snooze. I love to meet new people, but I am still learning to contain my excitement. I am really good at recognizing my name and going where I am called. I really like to play in the snow and even sit, but the cold bothers my tummy so I don’t usually lay down. I love to play with my toys, especially moose and lamb because they have squeakers. I also have a blankie that my puppy starters gave me. I like to carry it around the house and sleep with it every night!

I am a huge ball of energy and always up for an adventure! Sometimes I have a hard time settling outside because there is so much going on. There are birds chirping, dogs walking by and, all the new spring smells. The biggest distraction of all is when those pesky leaves blow right towards me I can’t help but lose my mind. My puppy raiser says I’m growing like a weed. So, she taught me how to safely jump into the car since she won’t be able to lift me into it much longer. She thought it would take a bit of time for me to learn, but I fooled her I am pro at my “up-up” cue. I also enjoy wearing my jacket out in public! People sometimes stare and talk to us, but I can keep my focus on my puppy raiser really well.

I am a very happy pup and when I get excited my whole body wiggles (not just my tail)! I am also a big goof who loves to work! I just graduated grade school and started high school last week. I love wearing my jacket! The minute it goes on I know I am in working mode and am on my best behaviour. I have been going with my puppy raiser on quick errands out in public and I have been acing it. My puppy raiser and I are currently participating in Paws in Motion so we have been going on lots of walks in new areas! Lately, I have been working on settling outside. I love being outside with all the smells and fresh air, but I have a hard time settling around all the animals and movement. My puppy raiser and I have been working on it and she says I’ll get there the more we practice it!

I turned one!! A few weeks ago it was my very first birthday (September 20th) and I had the best day ever! I went for a long walk in a new area, got lots of presents, had a special bday treat and went on a public outing (I helped my human vote)! I love being outside and I am getting much better at settling outdoors. When my human says it’s time to go inside I always give her my very best puppy dog eyes to try and convince her to stay outside a bit longer. One of my favourite activities is ‘hide the Kong’. I stay on my mat while my human hides the kong somewhere in the house. Once my human finds the perfect hiding spot I get released from my mat and go searching for my toy! I also love working out in public and enjoy doing mini, training sessions at home! I am currently working on my door manners (I just get so excited when new people come to our door) and brushing up on some of my basic skills. My human is always taking me on new adventures. A few weeks ago we went to an apple orchard to pick the biggest apples and soon she is taking me to a pumpkin patch! I am always ready and the first one packed for our adventures!

I have been having a blast these last few months! I went to Blue Mountain and walked around the village with my humans, I have been to many university classes (I slept while my human listened) and I got a little brother! I have taken my little bro (Bill) under my wing. I have shown him all the best toys, which human is in charge of (we keep a close eye on her) and we have been working on our skills together! I love walking through my humans’ legs and they think it is super funny when Billy walks through mine! In a few days, I move to my adult raiser’s house so we have been working on crisping up my skills for them! We have been crisping up my backing up cue, chin and my duration on my mat. I have been acing my public outings too! Lately, my human has been taking me out in public with just my flat collar (no gentle leader)! This was a challenge at first, but I got the hang of it! I have also been a huge snugglier lately with my humans and with the little bro.

Rolo has been accepted into NSD University as part of our 2022 Fall class!

Rolo is a happy dog, he greets everyone very warmly and has adjusted well to his adult raiser home. He loves everyone and loves to impress with his skills. He is currently working on backing up and his loose leash walking. He has been a great dog at home and has adjusted well to being the lab’s lab sleeping through all the meetings. When not in meetings, his favourite game is fetch.

Rolo will be taking a break from University to be assessed for NSD’s Skilled Companion Dog and Ambassador Dog programs.
